Beyond the Cover returns this summer 2012
New dates are Thurs. July 26th 2 p.m. to Sunday July 29th 4 p.m. - 3. 5 days of art and creativity.
Using the luminous elements of beeswax, the organic, shimmery properties of mica and the vintage layers of a book, a new structure is transformed in a unique, personal assemblage.
en·caus·tic:
A medium consisting of beeswax, resin and oil paints, applied in molten form and then fixed with heat after its application
mica:
A heat resistant group of minerals that can be split easily into thin, transparent sheets
altered book:
A form of mixed media art that changes a book from its original form into a different form, altering its appearance and/or meaning
assemblage (art):
An artistic process in which a three-dimensional artistic composition is made from putting together a variety of objects
Supria Karmakar and Patrice Baker will be altering books with you to create a unique piece of personal art. We will build spaces in the book to fill with your treasures. We will also use transparent mica to create a window in the front cover as well as a page in the book. You will be able to layer ephemera between the sheets of mica for a fascinating effect. Encaustic will then be used to embellish your altered book into a unique assemblage. No experience is necessary.
Join us to create your very own encaustic altered book with mica elements with Patrice Baker of Silverfish studios and Supria Karmakar of Supria's Designs.
