Welcome to Beyond the Cover...

Using the luminous elements of beeswax, the organic shimmery properties of mica and the vintage layers of a book, a new structure is birthed in a unique personal assemblage.

Together, Patrice Baker and Supria Karmakar will be altering books with you to create a unique piece of personal art. We will build spaces in the book to fill with your treasures and trinkets. Detail of Pat's mica inserted page in her altered book...with images between....

Mica is a natural forming mineral that has many interesting properties. It is extremely heat resistant, very shiny, transparent and translucent, can be found in a variety of luminous colours from brown to pink, and can be split into thin layers.
I have used mica extensively in making jewellery, in collage work, and to create window sandwiches in altered books. The layers are peeled apart, a 2-dimensional treasure is put between the sheets of mica, and then secured into the altered book, either in the cover or between altered pages. Drawings, words, gold leaf, skeleton leaves, the list of items that can be captured is endless. ~ by Pat Baker
