Using the luminous elements of beeswax, the organic shimmery properties of mica and the vintage layers of a book, a new structure is birthed in a unique personal assemblage.

Together, Patrice Baker (Guest Artist) and Supria Karmakar will be altering books with you to create a unique piece of personal art. You will build spaces in your book to fill with your treasures and trinkets. You will also use transparent mica to create a window in the front cover as well as a page within the book. You will be able to layer ephemera between the sheets of mica for a fascinating effect. Pulling the whole book together with the luscious quality of encaustic.

I am a member of Whitestone Gallery, and Rebecca Erickson and I are co-curating a book exhibit at Whitestone Gallery for March 2012...on books....

Open Book - An Exploration of Books as Art

DESCRIPTION:
We love books! We like reading, holding, storing, annotating, stacking and altering books. As artists we are interested in the book as objects and as ideas. The phrase Open Book can be interpreted in many ways.  For this exhibition the curators will be looking for submissions that expand on this idea and definition of book and will include art works in a variety of mediums.

Types of works we are most interested in receiving include (but are not limited to):
      work about books, on books, built with books
      painting – all mediums
      mixed media and found materials
      assemblage and three-dimensional
      sculpture
      photographs
      paper
      print

CURATORS:
Rebecca Erickson is a visual artist interested in collaborative work. She is working on a project with books at www.waxedbook.ca

Supria Karmakar is a visual artist who uses encaustic mixed media and altered book mediums within her artwork. She will be teaching “The Altered Book” at the 6th Annual International Encaustic Conference in Mass., USA in June 2012. http://encausticconference.blogspot.com/

DEADLINE:  Friday January 13th, 2012 (post-marked by midnight); there is no fee to enter

SUBMISSION REQUIREMENTS:
      3-5 images, 300 dpi, jpeg, maximum 1.8 MB each, on a CD mailed to: Whitestone Gallery, 80 Norfolk Street, Guelph, ON. N1H 4J2.  Marked Attention: “Open Book – An Exploration of Books as Art”; your CD will not be returned
      An image list with title, medium, size (height, width, & depth)
      Please label your images in the following manner:  number- title – name of artist. i.e.:  01-Flowers in the wind-JaneDoe.jpg
      A brief paragraph of your background and experience related to art (short bio.)
      Contact information: Name, mailing address, email, website, and phone number(s)
      Artist will be contacted by email the week of January 22, 2012 about successful submissions
      All accepted artwork for the exhibit must be installation ready, clearly labelled and with clear directions on any special installation requirements and delivered by 18 February 2012.  If mailed, sufficient postage for return mail must be provided. 
      Please note that Whitestone Gallery does not insure art work in the gallery.
      All work sold will be subject to a 25% commission fee.

Mica is a natural forming mineral that has many interesting properties. It is extremely heat resistant, very shiny, transparent and translucent, can be found in a variety of luminous colours from brown to pink, and can be split into thin layers.
I have used mica extensively in making jewellery, in collage work, and to create window sandwiches in altered books. The layers are peeled apart, a 2-dimensional treasure is put between the sheets of mica, and then secured into the altered book, either in the cover or between altered pages. Drawings, words, gold leaf, skeleton leaves, the list of items that can be captured is endless. ~ by Pat Baker

A medium consisting of beeswax, resin and oil paints, applied in molten form and then fixed with heat after its application

mica: 
A heat resistant group of minerals that can be split easily into thin, transparent sheets

altered book:
A form of mixed media art that changes a book from its original form into a different form, altering its appearance and/or meaning

assemblage (art):
An artistic process in which a three-dimensional artistic composition is made from putting together a variety of objects
