Using the luminous elements of beeswax, the organic shimmery properties of mica and the vintage layers of a book, a new structure is birthed in a unique personal assemblage.

Together, Patrice Baker (Guest Artist) and Supria Karmakar will be altering books with you to create a unique piece of personal art. You will build spaces in your book to fill with your treasures and trinkets. You will also use transparent mica to create a window in the front cover as well as a page within the book. You will be able to layer ephemera between the sheets of mica for a fascinating effect. Pulling the whole book together with the luscious quality of encaustic.

Mica is a natural forming mineral that has many interesting properties. It is extremely heat resistant, very shiny, transparent and translucent, can be found in a variety of luminous colours from brown to pink, and can be split into thin layers.
I have used mica extensively in making jewellery, in collage work, and to create window sandwiches in altered books. The layers are peeled apart, a 2-dimensional treasure is put between the sheets of mica, and then secured into the altered book, either in the cover or between altered pages. Drawings, words, gold leaf, skeleton leaves, the list of items that can be captured is endless. ~ by Pat Baker

en·caus·tic:
A medium consisting of beeswax, resin and oil paints, applied in molten form and then fixed with heat after its application

mica: 
A heat resistant group of minerals that can be split easily into thin, transparent sheets

altered book:
A form of mixed media art that changes a book from its original form into a different form, altering its appearance and/or meaning

assemblage (art):
An artistic process in which a three-dimensional artistic composition is made from putting together a variety of objects
